Back in 2008, we decided that North Carolina was where we wanted to retire. Our decision was based upon several factors, including the fact that North Carolina is retirement-friently for Federal pensions, the scenery is varied and beautiful (especially the mountains), and the people are very friendly. The question now was, how do we figure out where in North Carolina we want to be?
We knew that we wanted to be in the western part of the state, as we love the mountains. We also knew that we wanted to build a log home. We had been attending the log home shows in Chantilly Virginia for the past couple of years, and had been collecting house plans and looking for ideas. At the show in October of 2008, we met a representative of Fall Creek Land Company. They were offering lots for sale in a reltively new community named Grandview Peaks, with lots ranging in size from 1 to 15 acres. The community had paved roads, power, telephone, and 'high-speed' Internet (sorry - after FiOS, DSL is NOT high-speed). They invited us down, and we decided to visted over Martin Luther King's Birthday in January 2009.
We found a nice lot (they had many that were nice) that is 8.75 acres. We decided to buy the lot, and became the proud owners of 8.75 acres of hardwood forest! Now to figure out what house to build.
